The Howie Lab Coat, developed in the UK during the 1970s at the Public Health Laboratory Service (PHLS) by Dr James Howie and colleagues, was designed to enhance laboratory safety standards. Unlike traditional white coats, the Howie-style coat features a high collar, secure front fastening (often with press studs), long sleeves with knitted cuffs, and a closed back or rear fastening to reduce the risk of contamination.
